چکیده

The wetting and contact angle hysteresis on chemically patterned surfaces in two dimensions are analyzed from a stationary phase-field model for immiscible two phase fluid. We first study the sharp interface limit of the model by the method of matched asymptotic expansions. We then justify the results rigorously by the Γ-convergence theory for the related variational problem and study the properties of the limiting minimizers. The results also provide a clear geometric picture of the equilibrium configuration of the interface. This enables us to explicitly calculate the total surface energy for the two phase systems on chemically patterned surfaces with simple geometries, namely the two phase flow in a channel and the drop spreading. By considering the quasi-static motion of the interface described by the change of volume (or volume fraction), we can follow the change of energy landscape which also reveals the mechanism for the stick-slip motion of the interface and contact angle hysteresis on the chemically patterned surfaces. As the interface passes through patterned surfaces, we observe not only stick-slip of the interface and switching of the contact angles but also the hysteresis of contact point and contact angle. Furthermore, as the size of the pattern decreases to zero, the stick-slip becomes weaker but the hysteresis becomes stronger in the sense that one observes either the advancing contact angle or the receding contact angle (when the interface is moving in the opposite direction) without the switching in between.

The modified Cassie’s equation and contact angle hysteresis

In this paper, we derive a modified Cassie’s equation for wetting on chemically patterned surfaces from a homogenization approach. The derivation reveals that effective contact angle is a local average of the static contact angle along the contact line which describes all possible equilibrium states including the local minimum of the free energy of the system. The usual Cassie’s state which cor...

Wetting and spreading

Wetting phenomena are ubiquitous in nature and technology. A solid substrate exposed to the environment is almost invariably covered by a layer of fluid material. In this review, the surface forces that lead to wetting are considered, and the equilibrium surface coverage of a substrate in contact with a drop of liquid. Depending on the nature of the surface forces involved, different scenarios ...

Contact line characteristics of liquid–gas interfaces over grooved surfaces

Surface wetting is an important phenomenon in many industrial processes including microand nanofluidics. The wetting characteristics depend on the surface tension forces at the three-phase contact line and can be altered by introducing patterned groove structures. This study investigates the effect of the grooves on the transition in the wetting behavior between the Cassie to Wenzel regimes. Th...

Asymmetric wetting of patterned surfaces composed of intrinsically hysteretic materials.

Wetting of chemically heterogeneous surfaces is modeled using a phase field theory. We focus on a chemically heterogeneous surface composed of squares of one component material embedded in another. Unlike previous studies where the component materials were characterized only by an equilibrium contact angle, in this paper each of the component materials is constitutively allowed to exhibit hyste...

Unified model for contact angle hysteresis on heterogeneous and superhydrophobic surfaces.

Understanding the complexities associated with contact line dynamics on chemically heterogeneous and superhydrophobic surfaces is important for a wide variety of engineering problems. Despite significant efforts to capture the behavior of a droplet on these surfaces over the past few decades, modeling of the complex dynamics at the three-phase contact line is needed. In this work, we demonstrat...
